Dean

An hour later, after a quick shower, Dean and Caitlyn arrived at the bowling alley of all places. He hadn’t told her where they were going, so she was completely surprised when he pulled in.

“What are we doing here?” she asked.

“I get the feeling this isn’t what you would have chosen for our first official date,” he said. Little did she know he had a plan. A plan to take her everywhere he had wanted to bring her in high school.

“Not exactly,” she said.

“In high school, this was the place to be. I wanted to ask you to come bowling with me countless times, but...” He shrugged.

“So, we’re bowling now to make up for it?” she asked.

He smiled. “Is that okay?”

“Sure.” She opened her car door, and Dean rushed around, extending his hand to her. “Thank you.” She stepped out and blinked against the blinding sunlight. Dean jutted his elbow out so she could take his arm as they walked into the bowling alley.

The place was loud. The sound of balls colliding with pins reverberating off the walls. And there was music playing, though most of it was drowned out by the pins being bowled over. It was dark, which Dean assumed Caitlyn would like because it meant no one would really be able to see anyone else unless they were within about twenty feet of them. He couldn’t help thinking if this hadn’t been the hot spot in high school, it would have been a great place for Caitlyn to actually venture out to.

Dean brought her over to the shoe rental, where they traded their own shoes for the “oh so stylish” bowling shoes that reminded him of clown shoes. Dean started for an open lane in the middle, but Caitlyn motioned to one on the end instead. Did she have a problem with people having to walk by them to get to their own lanes? Perhaps she’d rather camp out in the dark recesses of the far corner.

Dean didn’t ask or protest. He motioned for her to lead the way. Their rented shoes clicked loudly on the slippery floor, and Caitlyn almost fell once. Dean grabbed her arm and smiled. Her face was bright red, and she looked around as if making sure no one else witnessed her near spill.

He brought her over to the computer and entered their names. Once he was finished, he said, “You’re up first.”

She was sitting on the hard plastic bench, her head lowered. “Oh. I’m not even sure I know how to properly hold the bowling ball,” she said.

Maybe he should have asked if she bowled before he brought her here. But then again, maybe she’d allow him to teach her. “No worries. I’ll help you.” He picked up a ball, testing it for weight. He found one he thought she could manage and then brought it to her. Then he walked up to the lane with her. “May I?” he asked, cautiously putting one arm around her body so he could guide her arm.
